The fly line is the most important part of a fly fishing outfit. It provides the weight needed to cast leader and fly, and the right type depends on the water, target species and the flies you want to use.
Line Types
- Floating line: the most versatile option for dries, nymphs and small wets. Great for rivers, lakes and ponds.
- Intermediate line: sinks slowly and is useful for fishing just below the surface on deeper pools.
- Sinking line: required for deep water or streamers; choose the sink rate based on how quickly you want the fly to reach depth.
Taper
- Weight-forward taper: the best all-round choice, easier to cast and good for most anglers.
- Double taper: ideal for roll casting and delicate presentations, especially on smaller water.
Tips
- Match the line weight to the rod rating, e.g. a 5wt rod should use a 5wt line.
- Use a floating line with a sink-tip or intermediate tip if you need a little more depth without switching to a full sinking line.
- Keep your line clean and dry to extend its life and maintain casting performance.
