Predator fishing is driven by lure choice and presentation. Hardbaits, softbaits and surface lures each have their place depending on water temperature, depth and fish behaviour.
Hardbaits
Crankbaits, jerkbaits and minnow plugs are excellent for scanning water and triggering strikes. Use them with a stop-start retrieve around weed edges and submerged features.
Softbaits
Soft plastics like shads, paddle tails and swimbaits work well on slow retrieves around reedbeds and drop-offs. Rig them on jig heads or weighted hooks for improved action.
Surface Fishing
Topwater lures are exciting in warm weather when predators are hunting near the surface. Poppers and walking baits can provoke explosive strikes over shallow margins.
Tips
- Use a wire or heavy fluorocarbon leader on pike to avoid bite-offs.
- Match lure size to the local baitfish and the size of the predator you expect to catch.
- Vary speed and action until you find what the fish want on the day.
