A good saltwater reel must be strong, smooth and resistant to corrosion. Whether fishing from the shore or a boat, choose a reel size that matches your rod and the species you are targeting.
Reel Size
- Shore fishing: 3000–5000 size reels are good for bass, codling and flatfish on light to medium gear.
- Boat fishing: 5000–8000 size reels handle heavier lines and larger species offshore.
Maintenance
Rinse reels with fresh water after every session to remove salt and grit. Periodically strip, clean and lubricate the spool, bearings and drag to keep the reel operating smoothly.
Tips
- Use braided line with a strong leader for better sensitivity and reduced stretch.
- Choose reels with sealed drags or corrosion-resistant coatings for longer life.
- Always tighten the drag before casting or fighting fish to avoid line damage.
